A Dirge.

(DEDICATED TO WOMEN ELECTORS). What a battle was raging here of late, With troops of the fearless pen ; How they slaughtered their victims on the spot, And never once said amen. I watched fair electors nearing the poll; No sorrow was writ on their brow ; They merely wiped out an enemy s name— I weep at .the thought of it now. With a stroke of the pen the deed was done, The dead and living there lay ; It was said their sleep would not bo long, For near was a judgment day, I thought of the nests of the mason bee — Living insects shut in as food, Compelled to remain while the eggs were hatched, As meat for the coming brood. I sorrow to think how pleasant “ to kill O, ladies 1 think of the brave : The deeds you wrought on that dreadful day Should follow you to the grave. Vita in Morte.
