A fire was discovered at ti\ c this morning on the ship Timaru, lying in the stream. It was subdued after several hours hard work by the ships crew and a party from H.M.S. Rangatira. The fire broke out in the charcoal insulated compartment, above the frozen meat hold and under the floor of the oil room on the main deck. It is believed lo have been due to spontaneous combustion of the oil and charcoal. The fire dropped from the insulator to a quantity of cement in the bottom of the ship and ignited the casks. Captain Fullarton states that the fumes from the burning charcoal were auffocatiug, and that he required to wear a respirator before examination of the seat of the fire. The damage consists of some decking burnt and portions of the insulation destroyed. About 500 casks of cement are destroyed by fire and water. The cement was on board on ship's account. The vessel arrived heie from London last April and has been waiting for the opening of the frozen meat season, when she goes south to load for London. The insurances on the ship and cement are cot known here.
