The Lost Steamer.

The Hinemoa sailed from the Bluff at 3 p.m. yesterday to make a further search for the s.s. Kakanui and those who were on board. She proceeds to the Campbell Islands and will make a thorough search there, and will also visi* the Aucklands and the Snares again. Macquarie Islands lie W.S. W. of the Campbells and a very severe westerly gale prevailed there two days after the Kakanui left for home. Now, presuming that the Kakanui had made good progress and that the gale overtook her, she would be about due west of the Campbells on that day, aud Captain Beat would, if he was compelled to take to the boats, try to make the Campbells, being the nearest land. Or supposing the steamer was not abandoned, she would still have to run before the gale if her engines were disabled, and would probably be blovrn into the vicinity of the Campbells. It must be admitted that the Hinemoa's missiou is not one from which good tidings may be expected, but the people of Neir Zealand will at ltast have tha consciousness 1 that nothing has been left undone to discoror the missing steamer. A telegram fr=j\n Dunedin states that in the opinion of n&nt£cal experts there the Kakanui was quite seaworthy for the trip, and Lloyds surveyor was of tne same opinion. The accusation publicly made against her owners of avarice is absolutely without foundation, as they received only LLX) for the trip. Following is a correct list of those who were on the Kakanui when she left Invercargill on 24th December : — William Best, captain, married ; his wife aud six children (two married) residing in Dunedin; other two children (both married) residing abroad. Jacob Eckhoff, master mariner, went as mate ; his wife aad eight children reside in Dunedin. Robert Stewart, engineer, nephew of Captain Jas. Stewart, of Dredge No. 222; married, but no children. Charles Norden, second mate ; married ; his wife and two children (one an infant) residing in Dunedin. William Ressler, cook and steward ; married ; his wffe and one child residing at Kaikorai. Hugh McMillan, fireman; single; his parents being resident in Dunedin. William Morgan, fireman ; married ; his wife and five children residing at Hillside. George Ludwig, A.B. ; married ; his wife and two children residing at Carey's Bay. Charles Silvester, A.8. ; single; has a brother on the local railways. Paul Sanne, A.8. ; married ; his wife and infant child residing in Athol place, Dunedin. James Stewart, junr., Customs officer, sou of Captain James Stewart ; married ; no children. The Kakanui was built by Messrs R. S. Sparrow and Co, and was valued at L 2500. She was insured for LIBOO, of which L3OO was in the national office of New Zealand, and LISOO in Home offices, the latter being underwritten as follows : — lndemnity Company, L 20 0; Universal Company, L 200; National Company, L 150; North China Company, L 20 0; Sea Company, LSO ; Lloyd's L7OO. The Mayor of Dunedin has convened a public meeting to organise measures for the relief of the persons affected by the supposed loss of the Kakanui.
