A VENAL.
The election for this borough resulted in favour of Mr Nicol, the voting being as follows :— T. S. Nicol, 28; George Challis, 15. GORE. The contest for this borough, which now includes Gordon, was not a very exciting one, it being very generally anticipated that Mr Mac Gibbon would head the poll. Shortly after 6 p.m. the Returning Officer announced the result to be — John Mac Gibbon 109 F. S. Canning 78 James Beattie ... ... ... 70 The declaration of the figures for the re spective candidates was hailed with cheers by the crowd of ratepayers that had assembled, with the usual mixed expressions of opinion. — Own correspondent.
