The damage along the Clarence is estimated at half a million sterling. The maize crop is almost totally destroyed. The river in places flowed forty miles wide. At Maitland the low-lying land and a number of houses were submerged. Mr Lee, an auctioneer at Narrabri, was drowned while attempting to rescue the children of Dr Lee, who is missing. MELBOURNE, March 17. A man driving a van fell asleep and upset a can of turpentine over himself. On arrival at home his wife struck a match to look at her husband, and it ignited the turpentine, which burned him to death. He was in liquor at the time. BRISBANE, Makoh 17A lunatic named Chippendale stabbed and killed a warder at Maryborough and escaped. The Government are distributing blankets and food to the suft'en-frf by the floods. Bread is a shilling a loaf in some districts. Several more bodies have been found.
