News from New Britain states that tbere had been fighting amongst the natives and they at last invited the American Consul to arbitrate. The latter was set upon by one party, and bad a narrow escape e£ his life by making a retreat through the bush. The others returned in force and killed the chief of the party which attacked the Consul. Received 9th, 10.30 p.m. Sir Henry Parkes, in addressing a public meeting at Wagga Wagga, said the Government recognised the soundness of the principle of imposing a tax on land, and it was intended to ask Parliament to amend the law in that direction.
