At midnight on Saturday some person unknown entered the Free Library and attempted to force open the case which usually contains the gold and silver ornaments presented to the city by Sir George Grey. The night watchman gave chase. bat was unsuccessful in discovering the would-be thief. The contents of the case are every evening removed to a strong room. NEW PLYMOUTH, Jdnk 13. John Wilson, secretary to the Waitara Harbour Board, was arrested today on a charge of embezzling L4O, fees payable to the Doard. There are other charges of a similar nature amounting in all to about LSOO. It ia reported that four candidates are out for New Plymouth, viz, Mr G. 11. Hughei (solicitor), and Mr K. M. Smith (the workmen's candidate), Mr W. Bayly, and Mr Samuel. DUNEDIN, Jdne 13. Colonel Sargood, when here, held out a hope that the High School cadets might meet the cadets of the Scotch Collpge, Melbourne, in a rifle competition. Toe difficulty was that the two corps are armed with different weapons, but Col. Sargood has now sent over a number of rifles and a thousand; rounds of ammunition of the type used in Victoria, and as the idea of a competition has also b9en taken up by other Victorian ichoola it ia likely tout the Otago High School cadeta will shortly try their powers against five or six companies of Victorian cadets. difficulty had been experienced in getting in the rates, nearly all the ratepayers hiving to be eummoned. It was resolved to leave the directors to sell the land made over to them by the New Zealand Agricultuial Company, and got in the rafceu a 8 soon aa possible. A poorly-attended meeting of represen tatives of societies was held to-night to make arrangements for a procession on Jubilee Day. The Mayor was not present, and nothing was done but the appointment of a sub-committee. Many people are making airangetaenta to illuminate their promises on the evening of the2lnt.
