The Queen's Fuod.

,*. Tho following circular letter, which haß baoo a(idre«B?.d by Lady Jervois to ladies io the- diil'drent centres of population in New Zealand, needs neither comment nor explanation though we shall take an early opportunity of giving the benevolent ob ject it ia intended to promote our humble advocacy : — . Government House, Wellington, 23rd May 1887. Dear Madam, — A short time since a meeting of Indies wa* hel i in Wellington to consider in what way the women of New Zealand could best commemorate the Queen's Jubilee. Before, however, a decision was ariiv.d at I received information of the steps which are being taken in the matter by the women of Australia. I learn that a fun 1 is there being started called the h Queen* Fund," to which women of all clashes »re iavited to contribute ia saaia varyiag from a penny to a pound, and it is proposed that the interest of the mon?y shall be u?ed ia gome way for the benefit of women. An earnest desire has been expressed that the Women's Jubilee Fund, which we have already agreed to start, shall be called by the same name, and shall have the same object as the fund now being set on foot in Australia, so that throughout Australasia women of all ranks should unite iv commemorating in the name way the Jubilee of our beloved Queen. This deaire hia b?«*n communicated by me to the Ladiea Committee in Wellington, and they, as well as myself, cordially agree iv the suggestion that we should work together on the same plan with our sifter* in Australia. I now write to a?k if you will kindly help insetting on foot this movemeut in Invercargill, I enclose the names of oher ladiea in the aame dietrfet to whom I am blbj writicg, and I hope that you will together be able *o form a committee with any others whom you may wish to auk, to carry on the work. 1 also enclose some circulars similar to those being used in Australia. The only diff-jrtnee in our New Zealand paper ia with regard to the object tn which toe money is to D 3 devoted. In Victoria and New South Wales it is to be used " to help women and children left without bread-winners " In Qiernsland it will be devoted to " giving University education to Queensland girl?." In New Zealand we simply propose that it snail be dewed to help woman who are without means of support, and it is suggested that each province should be free to use the fond as may be tkought bast, bo long as the name (Qieen's Fund) and ibe object (the help of wooien) are kept in view. May I suggest that in order that the movement may be m \d<". a general one, ie will be necessary to organise p'aDß for visiting, so that those in ."•bop«, factories, hotel?, &c, may be invited to con'rihute. Even children in schools might b; asked through their teachers to gke tbeir pennies It. is suggested that the mayor of each town afcould be asked to receive, subscriptions until a permanent secretary and treasurer for each province are appointed. The amount collected should be duly reported to Wellington (hon sec, Mrs Ra^-son, Bolton street,) in order that the total nutn co'leo ed may be known. Each province will of course have the management of the rooney collected within its borders. Trusting that you will be abe to help ii the manner I hava indicated,— iTouis faithfully, Lucy Jervois.
