Lake County.

. (FROM ODB OWN CORRESPONDENT.) ' The ceremonies connected with H.M. Birthday celebration passed oil remarkably well. In the morning M Battery turned out, and the usual Boyal salute waa fired out of the old Waterloo piece of ordnanj©. This old ( cannon weighs 15£ cwts., and is, as a matter of course, a muazle-loader, and a cumbersome piece of armament. The practice was, how . ever. good. Lieutenant-Colonel Wales wai firesfnf, The usual feu dc joie was fired and he band, who were also strongly represented, enlivened the proceedings by performing selections, Tbe parade through the town attracted a good deal of attention. Many visitors were present, no doubt attracted by the opening of the new Garrison Hall, and the attendant ball and free supper thereupon. If the band plays as well as it did on this day it will be & formidable force to meet on the Oth November, upon the occasion of the band contest in your city. The ball proved to he an immense success. The large building was simply filled but not over crowded. Where all the fair sex came from puzzles many still. Sixty couples could dance pleasantly in the hall, which was pleasingly decorated and lighted with electric lights" provided by tne Messrs Kvans, of Bkippcrß, who, under some difficulties, successfully accomplished the task, as well as that of illuminating Mrs Mcßride's Harp of Erin Hotel. The band was in attendance and played for the grand march, &$d als. for the first set of quadrilles. Previous to this latter, Lieut.- Col. Wales made a very happy address, and called upon the Mayor (James iipid, Esq.) to declare the hall open. This was done, and the band played thereafter two national airs. Dancing was kept up to 5 a.m. The refection was given free by Mrs Mcßride in a room intended for the stage ultimately. It met with general approbation and hot tea and coff .c were procurable at all hours with abundance of light refreshments. Lieutenant Colonel Wales (wbo was the architect of tht> building) congratulated the volqntsers and the public generally upon the possession y„ 90 commodious » i . ructw . sad wumly

testified to the faithful way it had been erected, by the contractor, and the workmen employed by tbem. The hall has excellent acoustic properties ; the want of these often defeats vocalists and speakers in large public build mgs. The day was, it will be seen, a pretty busy one and the juveniles were not neglected. Mining matters continue as last reported, that is they are fairly prosperous. The season is a very open one with fine sunny days and an absence of heavy snow or severe frosts. 30th May, 1887.
