. — * (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. A torpedo, invented by Mr Jardine, of Wellington, and now under offer to the Government, was tried to-day. The special advantages claimed for the iovention are cheapness and certainty of action, It resembles the McEvoy torpedo in shape, but instead of being fired by electricity it is fired by pulling a cord coanected with the machinery iobide ; so that, althqugh other torpedoes are often renderei useless by the electric connection being shot away, if the same should occur with the Jardine, tbe explosive, by the same act, is still available. The trial was mainly devoted to ascertaining whether the primary charges were affected by submersion, and ono containing such a charge wis filled with water and allowed to fctaad in that condition for ten minutes. It was then fire! ; the explosion p oving that no injury had been done to the charges by suboier* Bion. Tbe general result of trial was very satisfactory, WESTPORT, Tuesday. The Resident Magistrate's Oonrt was occupied all day with a cbarge against 18 TJaioh colliers recently on strike at the Weeport Coal Com pany's mine, of assaulting and intimidating non-union bands.
