Wakeham has been committed for trial for the attempted murder of his wife. The unemployed have declined to accept stone breaking, and are petitioning the Government to employ them on street improvements. WELLINGTON, Monday. Arrived — Rotorua, with the San Francisco mail. The southern portion goes on by the Te Aoau at 3.30 this afternoon. NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday. A store belonging to Chew Chong, nt Inglewood, was burnt down this morning at about five o'clock. The following are the insurances on the stock : — Standard, L4OO ; Northern, L4OO ; Norwich, L 350 ; Phoenix, L 250. Insurances on the building:—Standard, L 250; Northern, LIOO. The total insurances are L 1750. GREYMOUrH, Monday. Heavy rain fell throughout yesterday and culminated in a flood in the river. This morning about 3 o'clock a wall of water came down, and while the men were at work in one of the cylinders it carried two ro.ws of temporary piles away, althoughidriven 15 feet in the The-derrick at the end of this work waa carried away, also the donkey engine and boiler. : Tfco cylinders were, not attached to the woodwork, and th^ damage is nbt' i considered heavy. CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. : A walking contest took- place to m ight' between Arthur Hancock, the well-known pedestrian, and'Libeau, of Akaroa. The;, distance was 10 miles, and the stakes^ Lso.i Libeau forced the' pace trempnd--oUßly,at the start,, J>ut ..after going three railes he complained of a stitch in hie side and gave up. Hancock walked the rest of the distance. At the Kaiapoi R.M. Court to-day O. B. Richards was fined L 2 for raffling a gun and other articles without obtaining a license from the Colonial Secretary. Three of the participators in the raffle were fined 10s each. JDUNEDIN, Monday. ' The following are the entries for the Kensington Handicap : — Scraps' filly Tairoa, Captain Webster, Uverton Lad, Matanaka, Billy, and Water Nymph. ~ The City Council havereceived an offer of a donation of L2OO from a gentleman for* establishing a market, and Bteps are to be taken in that direction by the Council.
