(FBOM OUB OWN GOBBE&POSDENT.)

Wellington, Aup. 5.

The Government have sustained an utter defeat upon the East and West Coast Railway resolution. Up to this afternoon it was doubtful how the division would go, but by the time the House met it was certain that the Government would be out of the running. The Government took their defeat in perfect silence. An aDalysia of the list shows that of a House of 95 member?, Mr Coster was absent, and the seat for Brnca was of course unrepresented, aad the Speaker could not vote except in the case of a tie. This left 92 members capable of recording their votes ; of these Gl voted and 26 failed, making 87 in all ; thus leaving five to be accounted for, viz., Messrs Bradshaw, Stewart, Fitzherbert, Grace, and Te Aro. Of these, Mr Stewart would have voted with the majority, but was prevented by the whip in the belief that he had paired ; Mr Bradshaw, it is said, would al6o have voted against the scheme. Of the members nominated for the committee only Major Atkinson and Mr Mitcbelson voted with the noes, the remainder having either voted with or paired for the ayes.
