Municipal and Harbour Affairs.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sib, — Several letters have been written lately about the Mayor and Council giving asphalt footpath work privately ; bat who gave the dredging of the harboui ? Will a councillor at their nest meeting, ask how much Mr Ramsay is getting per day, for how long he is engaged, and how many yards of stuff, he has taken up since he started ? 1 consider the Council is spending the ratepayers' money illegally— in fact, throwing it away. It appears to me that our Mayor is too officious altogether. He appears to be engineer, fore* man, and chief carter for the town. I noticed the foreman picking gravel on the beach instead of looking after his proper work about tb.9 town ; such as seeing that the men put proper gravel on the footpaths in* stead of rubbish like that they have put down on Ytban street; 1 think it time that every one should know his place. — I am, &&, Faib Play.

[" Fair Play" does not read the papers or affects to be ignorant of the Council s action, Mr Ramsay's remuneration for dredging in the harbour was publicly announced as £2 168 per day, and bis engagement is terminable at shoit notice. The wisdom of making such an agreement is fair subject for comment, and doubtless some councillors will take " Fair Play's" hint by enquiring what has been the result of Mr Ramsay's opera* tiona.— Ed. S.T.]
