Major Harris received a unanimous vote of confidence at Otahuhu yesterday night.
Mr Bryce i« expected to return £rom Ro*orna to-morrow.
Raymond Davis, a seaman, who shipped on b^ard the Hermoine, for London, cashed his advance note of £6 and disappeared. He was arrested at the Thames gold fields and was fined £4 and sent to the ship, but refused to work. Brought up again he was sentenced to two months' imprisonment with hard labor.
Mr Graves Aicken has been elected chairman of the Harbor Board.
A son of Mr H. L«ne, sawmiller, Russell, aged five years, fell off the rocks into the sea and was drowned.
Hugh Hamilton, aged 32, employed at Archibald Clarke and Co.'s, returned home early this morning, and, entering his bedroom, fell against the bedstead, fracturing his skull. He was found unconscious in his room at daylight, and died during the forenoon. He leaves a wife and three children.
WELLINGTON, Tuesday
Thompson and Morgan were again breught up to-day, and charged with having 40 gallons of whisky in their possession upon which the duty had not been paid. A further remand was granted to enable an important witness tj be present, bail being allowed each prisoner, himself iii £200 and two sureties of £100 each. Geo. Taylor, resident of the Porirua district, was charged with having in his possession certain instruments for illicit distilling. He was also remanded and allowed the same bail.
CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday.
Mr S. C. Phillips, the gaoler at Lytteltou, has been presented with a haidsoine testimonial by the officers of the gaol, on the occasion of his leaving to take charge of the Dunedin gaol. Mrs Phillips was also presentee] with a memento iv the shape of a necklet and bracelet.
A man named Perrin was fined £2 for pulling down the fire alarm placards yesterday. He was drunk, and seemed to be under the impression that the telegraph poles on which the placards were fixed were under his especial protection.
DUNEDIN, Tuesday,
The Cromwell Company have completed a three weeks' crushing, which yielded 252 ounces retorted gold from 305 tons of stone.
Mr George B, King, town clerk at Lawrence, was found dead in his office last night. Chlorodyne was found in his possession. Deceased had been drinking very heavily. Mr King, who committed suicide last evening, having taken chlorodyne, had been until a few months ago the leading spirit in the Good Templars Lodge, but latterly had been gi fen to drink. A married woman named McVickar, residing at South Dunedin, made a determined attempt to commit suicide to-day by cutting her throat with a carving kaife. She had been suffering from asthma and had threatened the previous day to drown herself. It is possible she may recover.

The Harbor Board employes having formed themselves into a branch of the Otq.go Trades and Labor Leaguß asked Mr Fisfy, M.H.R., to be president, but he has feplied declining, owipg to. being a member oi tbe Board, and consequently oue of their employers. The Shamrock Hotel at Timaru was offered by auction to-day, but passed in at £6,400. " The carnival continues to be largely patronised. The committee fixed Siturday for the costume cricket match, and have been remonstrated with by the Jockey Club ao it ig the second day of their spring meeting, "iiovveyej.-, tjje Carnival people bave replied, regretting th^ir iiiability to postpone the affair. There seems to be some feeling imported into the matter.
A case of great hardship came before the Police Court to-day. A woman named $Jc f nt.njjp,e sued her husband for £10 due on an order for hpr maintenance. She had four children, and £160 was dup to her upon the order. She was now unable to work to support her children, and her husband was living wiili another woman by whom he had four children.
