(PER PBESS ASSOCIATION). AUCKLAND, Tuesday. Messrs G. M. Reid and the Hon. Robert Campbell are expected here by next mail in connection with the settlement of the lands acquired by the East Coast Lands Settlement Company. Mrs Sydney Taiwhanga, formerly Mrs Mordern, wife of the famous Maori agitator now in England, went with her halfcaste child in her arms to-day to the relieving officer to apply for rations. She stated that Sydney had only left her two pounds on going to England, and says she will make it lively for the ambassador on his return. Barlow, the half-caste, did not come on to Auckland, but went to the Native settlement at Mangare. He had contracted with Messrs Kohler to go with their waxworks to the Thames on exhibition, but probably the arrangements will be broken off as the natives might assault him there. A vessel is reported oft the coast answering the description of the Ashraore, from London, with 100 passengers. There was an attempt at incendiarism at Newton East Public School, at two o'clock this morning. The fire broke out near the meter and tlie gas was found turned on. The fire was suppressed after going up the lining of two class rooms and melting gas connections. NEW PLYMOUTH, Tuesday. Further information re the missing boat which left Manakau is to hand. She was seen about two miles to the north of the mouth of the Mokau river, with only one man named Herman Albert Wiltke, a German, aboard. He was seen making for the beach on the north side of the river, and a party went across to his assistance, but before they got to the spot, the boat was capsized, and the man was drowned. The boat was washed up on the beach, and as the clothes of Wiltke were found in the bottom of the boat, it is evident he had tried to swim ashore, but the sea was too heavy for him. CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. The alarm created in Akaroa by the fires yesterday has been intensified by another fire this morning. Shortly before two o'clock the Somerset Hotel and outbuildings, situate at the head of the Bay, were burned to the ground. In this instance the incendiary had to deal with an empty striuture. No one, so far as it is at present known, had recently been living or sleeping on the premises. Owing to tbis fact, the lessee neglected to obtain a renewal of his policy, and it is naturally supposed that this new act of incendiarism is the work of the same person who fired the hotels at Akaroa yesterday. The buildings weie insured in the London, Liverpool and Globe office. The insurances on Waekerlie's Hotel, destroyed yesterday were — building, £400 ; furniture, £200, in the London, Liverpool and Globe office. Mr Baylej-, the proprietor, estimates his loss at £1000 over and above the insurances. The distribution of diplomas in connection with the conferring of degrees in the University of New Zealand took place to-day in the new hall of the Canterbury College. Mr H. J. Tancred, Chancellor of the University, presided, and delivered an address. Addresses were made also by Professors Von Haast and Brown. The insurances on the Somerset Hotel, Akaroa, were — Norwich Union, £1000 ; Liverpool and London, £500. Nothing further is as yet known of the perpetrator^ and the excitement and alarm are greater than ever, Judgment was given to-day in the Gase against the Harbor Board by the contractors for tbe dry dock, who claimed £1700 bonus for completion of" the contract under the time fixed. The board had paid £600 and judgment waß given in their favor. -, '' DUNEDIN, Tuesday. « Mr Conycrs was presented to-day with a purse containing 100 soys., and to-night
