«■ (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, Tuesday. At a meeting of the Harbor Board today a letter was read from Mr E. F, Menziee, of Napier, as agent for an English financial firm, offering to land any sum from £60,000 for harbor works. At the Wosleyan district meeting a resolution was passed recommending the Conference to send to England for a supply of efficient young men to meet the present demand for ministers. NEW PLYMOUTH, Tuesday. Hiroki has been committed for trial on the charge of murder. WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The Appeal Court was occupied to-day with the totalisator cases Franck v. the Canterbury Jockey Club and Hobbs and Goodwin. They hiive not yet been disposed of. The police have given notice of their intention to strictly enforce the Gaming and Lotteries Act against all sweeps on the racecourse to-morrow. The following are the vital statistics for Wellington for November, which virtually ends to-day, the public offices being closed to-morrow: — Births, 122; deaths, 25; marriages, 18. WANGANUI, Tl-:-:.-;uy. A young man named Oswald S. Brodip, a settler who was recently at " the front " with the Alexandra Cavalry, shot himself with a revolver in a solicitor's office this afternoon. He is badly injured, but hopes are entertained that the wounds will not piove fatal. Private trouble is supposed to be the reason for the rash act. CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Mr A. M. OUivier, the well-known cricketer, broke a blood vessel yesterday. He is not out of danger. A case in which considerabls interest has been taken lately was settled at the R.M. Court, Rangiora, to-day. It was an action to recover £20 for fees paid to Dr M'Carthy by one VV. Weir, and expenses incurred through neglect in attendance on his daughter. The child had met with au accident and broken her leg, and it was contended that Dr M'Carthy had, in setting the leg, got it out of its proper position, whereby it had to be rebroken and reset, and this it was stated had caused a shortening of the leg. A large amount of evidence was taken, and the case had been remanded on several occasions for the consideration of points raised. The Magistrate, in giving judgment, said that Dr M'Carthy's contention that tl^e displacement was caused by a badly-made bed; and the interference of the father was not at all borne out by evidence, as Dr Ovenden had afterwards successfully treated-, the case with the same bed and means.
