COALS.
I TO THE EDITOK. '■ ' i Sir, — I should like to draw public atten tion to the desirableness of assisting the development of our local resources. Theije is good coal at the Nightcaps, Orepuki, ruul Preservation Inlet. These measures are not yet available, but they could be madfr so very soon, if the public were taking .this rjuestionjof doingsorhto consideration. Tl»te price of coals is a great item in one's domestic expenditure. I have for years paid 50s a ton for Newcastle coals, and do ho now, although the Government, I understand, pay only 27s a ton for tin; saino kind of coals, and the coal merchants of Dunedin advertise Newcastle coals for sale at 40s a single ton. The Invercargill public have to pay a price for these coal« which can only be characterised as exorbitant. An effort should be made to supply the public with the locally producible article. — I am, &c, Domestic. Invercargill, Aug. 4, 1880.
