(PEE PRESS ASSOCIATION'S SPECIAL WIRE) SYDNEY, Jan. I. A large number of German and Austrian exhibitors have applied for space at the Exhibition. The French Government place 115,000 francs on the budget to assist exhibitors. Negotiations between the seamen on strike and the A.S.N. Co. are proceeding favorably, and there now appears to be prospects of an early settlement. MELBOURNE, Jan. 1. As the English cricket match against the Australian representative eleven commences to-morrow, the date for the first match to be played in Melbourne by the Canterbury Eleven has been altered to the 7th. The Canterbury players are practising assiduously every day, in preparation for the struggle. Jan. 2. In the match between the English and the Australian Eleven, the first innings of the English closed for 113. The Australians are in, and have made 95, with the loss of three wickets. In the Champion Race the following was the result : — Wellington ... ... ... 1 Warlock 2 Bosworth ... ... ... 3 Nine started — time, omiu. 34sec. The weather was fine, and there were about 34,000 people present.
