RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

♦ (Before H. McCulloch, Esq., R.M.) Wednesday, March 15. Mary Anne Poole was brought up on remand from the previous day. William Souness, accountant in the Colonial Bank, said that he did not know the accused, who had no account in the Colonial Bank, Invercargill. The cheque produced was signed George Gordon, but there was no account in the name of George Gordon in the Bank. This was all the evidence, the accused had nothing to say, and she was then committed for trial. Jeremiah Lahey was charged with stealing the watch of George Kelly, at Harrisville, on the 21st of January, the same being valued at £5. Lahey said that he had not been guilty of the theft. Inspector Fox explained that on the 21st January, Kelly and another man had been fighting at Harrisville, and that Lahey, being a mate of Kelly's, held his vest, the watch being in it. A man named Bayfield saw Lahey take the watch out of the vest pocket, and it was never afterwards returned to Kelly. Lahey subsequently went to Dunedin where he at once got into trouble, and was imprisoned. In the meantime a warrant had been issued for Lahey 's arrest, on account of the theft of the watch, but he had only been forwarded to Invercargill that morning. Kelly was up-country, and the other witness, Bayiield, was last heard of as being at the Bluff. Under these circumstances he would ask an adjournment for one week. This was granted.
