RIVERTON.
(from our own correspondent.) Ist July. The funeral of the late Mr Prazer, of the Waimatuku, took place yesterday at the Kiverton Cemetery, when, in spite of the severe weather, a numerous cortege followed the remains to their last resting place, most of the farmers in and around the district putting in an appearance. There is to be another funeral to-day at the game burial ground, that of W P. Despard, who died at James's Aparima Hotel, on Sunday evening last. The ! death of this poor fellow has taken no one down hereby surprise, ho boing well known as a sufferer from dipsomania, that dire disease unfortunately so prevalent in the colonies. The election of M.P.C. for Aparima District came off with the result anticipated in my last, Mr James Mackintosh of the Otautau being returned by a considerable majority. There have been several narrow j escapes from serious accidents in South Eiverton during the past week, arising from the want of lights upon the various deep cuttings upon railway and road works in the vicinity of the south end of the bridge. Surely the Corporation could afford to get a few lamps before some sad accident occurs, which most assuredly will be the case should steps to remedy the evil not be at once taken. Quite a shower of Celestial bodies were cast upon our shores a few evenings ago, in the shape of some thirty or more of the almond-eyed race, ex s s. "Wanganui (to the order of Messrs Proudfoot), and amongst them we noticed several of the 7th and Bth magnitude, and known to the scientific in astronomy as Ah Cbee (to pronounce which rightly a small sneeze will assist) , Fat Chin, Sing Hi, Sing Lo, Yung TJn, and one or two others whos© appellations could not be determined at the time. Of course the European navvies at once fraternised, and only await a favorable opportunity for displaying their kind feelings towards them, The Vivian Troupe were very successful down here, and their performances were well received — so much so, that Mr Mayo intends shortly to provide another good thing for a Kiverton audience.
