It ia stated that the General Government hare offered to Major Palmer, of the Eoyal Engineers, and that he has accepted, an appointment to examine and report upon the state of the surreys throughout the Colony, with a view to assist the Governmnnt in the introduction of a general system of survey. Cheistchttech, Jan 21. A boat was capsized on the Simmer Bar yesterday evening, when two men, and one boy 14 years old, swam ashore. Three men were drowned, all three being working men ; two leave wives and small families. Arrangements for the regatta on tbe Sumner are progressing satisfactorily. It is likely to prove a success. Lyttelton, Jan 21. The Lady Jocelyn has arrived, 72 days from tbe Downs. There are no particulars to hand.
