MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
» The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Municipal Council took place last night. Present — His Worship the Mayor, and all the Councillors. : : Amongst the correspondence was a letter from Mr Bower, gas manufacturer. It referred to tbe shipping of'-cerfcahi gas plant, drawing on the Corporation's bankers for specified sums, and also to the i selection and sending out of, a ,fore-, man to oversee the gasworks. ', ■'. ■'■, .-■ A communication was received from. ... ; the Provincial Under-Secretary^ aoknow- ' ledging the j receipt of a letter from the Council enclosing a resolution drawing , the attentiod of the Provincial Government to the compact entered into at the time of reunion, namely, that every third immigrant ship to the Province should come direct to the Bluff, the Under- ( Secretary slating that the Provincial Government had forwarded a copy of the resolution to the General Government for its consideration. 1 After discussion, it was resolved that the Provincial Government should . again be written to, stating that the Council would be glad to learn what recommendation the Provincial Government had made to. the General Governmeat when forwarding the resolution. . Under ordinary business attention was drawn to several matters amounting to breaches v of the bye-laws, and reference 1 was made to the delay which r had taken , place in giving effect to the resolution , empowering the Mayor to remove Pay ; and Campbell's shipping office, and to Eubfcerfuges resorted to in order to avoid , the removal of Brown's agency office. . . His Worship observed that people seemed to think that they could evade the byelaws and the Council's orders with impunity, but he was determined that they should be taught very differently. Councillor Goodwillie asked a question in reference to Tyne street, and it was stated that Mr Brunton, Eesident Engineer, had said that he bad been instructed to put Tyne street right. The Council thereafter adjourned.
