MELBOURNE.

The Argus of the 15th inst. reports :— In the import market only a fair amount of business has been transacted to-day. Breadstuffs are without animation, and only a very trifling business is done. For bakers' lots, we do not now quote over £13 15s to £14, bags returned. There is no disposition on the part of dealers to enter upon transactions of any extent, but we learn of a moderate paroel having changed hands at £13 ss. Wheat iB inactive, but quotations of prime quality are maintained at 6s 2d to 6s 3d. In oats no special business has come before us beyond what transpired at auction, when about 1200 bushels Tasmanian were quitted at 4s 10£ d to 5s l^d ; for fair samples of feeding we quote up to 5s 21, bufc for milling qualities over 5s 4d could scarcely now be got. Maize is improving ; stocks are not heavy, and 4s 9d is generally asked. The auction sale of sugar was the chief feature in the day's trade. The entire cargo of the Emily was offered, when 5137 bags were disposed of. Rations were placed at £23 15s ; browns, at £23 ; low counters, at £30 5s to £30 10s ; yellow counters, at £31 to £32 10s ; brewing crystals, at £32 to £33 ; greyish whites, at £33 ; and whitish counters, at £34. A line of 50 bales of cornsacks has, ire understand, changed hands at 10s 6d. For hops there is no inquiry, and sales are most difficult to make ; 100 pockets 18735, offered as per bulk, by auction, were cleared off at lOd. Candles are in moderate request ; 900 boxes were got rid of publicly at 10|d to 10fd. Quicksilver is still advancing, and holders now ask 7s. The timber sales chiefly comprise lumber. Scotch flooring, red and white, realised from 10s 6d and 10s 91 to 13s 3d and 13s 6d ; and beaded brought 6s 6d to 8s 9d. White pine sold at £10 ss ; W. P., T. and Ch, at £9 5s to £9 12s 6d ; carpenters' clear at £8 2s 6d to £8 ss. Laths brought 25s 3d. In liquids there is nothing to report in brandies, with the exception of the quittance of 100 quarters Associated Vineyard at 6s 9d. We learn that the agents for J. and R. Tennent have been informed that when the last mail left their stock of matured beer was almost exhausted, and they would be unable to ship again to this maiket before the middle of July, when the new brew, it was expected, would be matured and ready for bottling, the quality promising to be very superior. Quotations are maintained at 10s 91 for parcels.
