» ■ Auckland, Feb. 21. A telegram from Newcastle states that petroleum springs have been discovered near Rahui Pakake, eleven miles from Newcastle. Dunedin, Feb. 21. The committee of the Athenaeum have decided to open the institution between 2 and 6 o'clock on Sunday afternoons. Most of the immigrants by the Mongol have elected to remain in Otago, although they were originally shipped for Wellington and Auckland. The majority have already landed. The Guardian reporter has interviewed Mr Holloway, who came out in charge of the Mongol's passengers. Mr Holloway is going to make a tour of the Northern provinces, in order to report to the home association with which he is connected. He does not think that there will be any difficulty in getting a full supply of immigrants for New Zealand. He himself, before coming out, succeeded in getting over 300 in less than a month. Hokittka, Feb. 21. The following unpublished telegrams were received by the Albion : — London, Feb. 10. The following Australian candidates have been returned to Parliament : — Messrs Lowe, Childers, Young, William Macarthur, Alexander Macarthur, York, Brogden, and Charles Reed. Messrs Torrens, Macfie, Banks, Willans, L<ardet, and Lord Newry, Australians, were rejected. Sydney, Feb. 10. The Tartar took a large mail for California, and about forty passengers. The Anglican Synod has closed.
