TOWN BOARD.
A meeting of the Town Board was held on jl Wednesday- afternoon, within" the office, Tay. street, at three o'clock. : Present—Messrs J. M.K. Clarke (Chairman), ' Giller, Lockhart, Beaven, Hay,' Garthwaite,.and Mclvor. . The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. solicitor, to. the board. Mr Giller introduced Mr T. S.' Weston, the newly appointed solicitor, to the Board. ASSISTANT CLERK AND COLLECTOR. Letters were read tenderingfor this ofice from Messrs W. J. Bridges, W. Westwood, B Kenneth Morrison, Duncan McDonald (mes- n senger to the Board), R. S. Mattock/ J. Kirk- 1 wood, and C. Wentworth. ' ' § Mr Giller said -that so Far as testimonials ff went, Mr Bridges; supported by Mr H.McCul- I loch and Mr P. L. Erancis, and.Mr Morrisor, 1 backed by Messrs Harvey and Stuart, seemea I to him the most eligible candidates. He would propose that Mr Bridges receive the j appointment, with salary in terms of his offer, | of £150 per annum.: He knew Mr Bridges personally. He had been following, a line of life which would particularly suit him for tb.o | duties. They wanted a person who, in the i event of the Chief Clerk being incapacitated I from sickness or otherwise, might be able to 1 temporarily take his place. | Mr Garthwaite thought Mr Morrison, hy 1 reason of the high character given him by his § last employers, Messrs Harvey and Stuart, i was better adapted. : Mr Giller said he did not know Mr Morrison. Mr Garthwaite replied that he did not know Mr Bridges. Mr Beaven said that Mr Bridges did not seem to write a very excellent hand. 1 Mr Giller thought it was at any rate a fashionable hand. (Laughter.) Mr Garthwaite moved that Mr Morrison bo appointed, which motion upon being put wag carried. RESIGNATION. A letter was read from; Mr Wm. Robertson stating that he declined- to attend further meetings of the Boardj as he thought he could not do justice to the ptiblSc. Mr Garthwaite said he thought the newspaper reporters had hit Mr Robertson t»o hard. (Laughter.) LV.GAL ADVICE. Mr Weston said that he would be glad to give any professional advice which the Board might wish. The Chairman intimated that he would be communicated with in regard to framing bye- 5 laws ; and that the Clerk would intimate to him any meetings at which his services might be needful. PUNI CREEK. The Clerk read a letter from His Honor the Superintendent, in which it was intimated th«t the diversion of the Puni Creek requested 1 y the Board, would be carried out upon tht; estimates for the same being passed; also, that a system of sewerage was under consideration. FOOTPATH FLAPS. A letter was read from Mr Roebuck requesting permission to construct a flap in the footpath of Tay-street, near the Union Hotel, in order that access might be had to the cellars. i Mr Garthwaite moved, and it was resolved that, in regard to this application, and also that of Mr Puettelkow, the Engineer be instructed to draw out the plan and specification of a suitable flap. Mr Hay thought a rate should be levied for those flaps. Mr Lockhart thought it should not. IaETTBR from solicitor. A letter was read from Mr T. S. Weston, accepting the appointment of solicitor to the Board. assessment forms. A copy of proposed assessment forms was laid before the meeting, and having been amended and improved, a thousand copies were, upon the motion of Mr Beaven, ordered to be printed. BYE-LAW COMMITTEE. Mr Lockart wanted to know if this Committee would bring up their report in a year's time. . ("Laughter.) If it were not soon pn • sented, a new Committee ought to be appointed. FIRE EXGrNE COMMITTEE. Mr Lockart would also like to know what this Committe was doing. He did uot believe they had held, any meetiug. The Chairman said he would be glad to attend any day, if the raembefs would appoint one. Mr Garthwaite said, that the Board Committee need not apply tb the Insurance Companies for assistance, as the Volunteer Brigade Committee had forestalled them. Mr Lockhart said, that not only were Erre Engines necessary, but also tanks distributed through the town. Let a fire break out in closely built localities, and then in the absence of water supply, where were you i* Mr M'lvor thought the Waihopai might b» made use of. Erom his experience in digging, he thought there was gold in InvercargUl. It was resolved that the Board Committee meet on an early day— that the Volunteer Brigade Committee be invited to attend, and that the Engineer having ascertained the views of both, should prepare an estimate of the. probable cost of tanks, engines," &c. , FINANCE COMMITTEE. Mr MTvor was anxious that this committee exert itselFat once before the estimates were passed. They must raise the wind to the tune of .£50,000 or £60,000. They must lay before the Executive a statement of themoney they wanted. Mr Beaven said they would be able to get neither £50,000 nor £60,0b0. ' ' „ Mr Lockhart moved that the sum be £55,000 and that Messrs Beaven, M'lvor, Hay, T. M. K. Clarke and. Giller, be appointed a deputation to wait upon his Honor the Superintendent thereaneut. - Mr M'lvor moved that the sum applied for be £60,000. It was as well to bid high, N especially as they were sure to be cut down. y (Laughter;. Mr Lockhart would make it then £60,000. The motion was carried.
