In consequence of the great excitement in town, owiiig to the reported rich discoveries in the Wakatip district, a gentleman from this office will start to-day lor the new El Dorado, for the express purpose of collecting authentic information on the spot, aud also taking notes as to the hest and shortest route fiom Invercargill. In another column will be found the pardculrrs of the discovery, as far as they are ac present known. A very fine sample of green gooseberries was shown us yesterday, from the farm of Mr. Ross, of Hosslyn. Southland ought no longer to be dependent on other colonies for her supplies cf th.s fruit. A movement has been initiated for the purpose of iorming a company fur placing boats on the Waikiuip lake. Already a large number of the shares have been taken up. The recent discoveries on the bhotover and Arrow rivers appear to have given an impetus to enterprise which has long been wanted. We are given to understand that a boat, (7 tons) which is at present in the New River, will be at once placed on the Waikatip as a passenger and cargo boat, for which she is well suited. Keports anent the seasons clip are very conflicting; the weather has certainly in some instance." had a bad effect, but altogether we think that this year will show a decided improvement on last, both as regards quantity and quality. We shall shortly be in a position to place certain information on the subject before our readers. The following letter has been handed to us for publication, by a runner connected with his office. He states that a copy was sent to the Southland News and has not been inserted. We have very seldom seen a more unjustifiable attack than that contained in the paragraph to which this note owes its origin, and, according to the well known law of journalism, ihe injured party was ciearly entitled to a hearing. Our contemporary thinks differently ; but for the future he must be more careful : — To the Editor of the Southland News. Sir, — In your issue ot the 19 Lh instant, you are pleased to observe tliut '■ within the laat few da^s v tresb source of industry has been opened up iv this place which promises fair to afford g od employment to a limited number of stout lunged loalers, &c." Now sir, do you tneau to assert thut every one that sells newspapers is a loafer, if so, we must consider th at the worthy proprietors oi Southland News are no better than loafers. I ask as a working mau, and in the name of every working man who is earning an honest living, is it manly, is it honorable to throw your spleen upon me the salesman of the Invekcaegill Times? If you had not the energy to push your own paper and make it circulate arouud the Town, it is no fault of mine. As for me being a loafer, there are plenty I could mention, both ia Victoria, Dunedin, and Invercargil, who know to the contrary. Hoping you will insert this in your next issue. I remain, &c, C-HAELEB LVOi.B. Invercargill, November 21efc, 1802.
;■; Ai the hearing of the case of Quirk v. Cop •pihger yesterday at the'liesident Magistrate's ■Court w^icfi resulted in the committal .of the 1 latter for trial, a rather extraordinary statement was made by his Worship.- When the Counsel for the prisoner was about ro call witnesses, he was informed by the Magistrate " that there would be no necessity, as he had already made up his mind to commit the prisoner." This might do in Naples, but we think it out of place where English laws are in force. An inquest was held at River ton on Saturday, 22nd instant, before Mr. Geo. M'Clure, M.D., coroner, on the body of bainuel Broadly who was drowned on the 4th inst. by the upsetting of a boat whilst crossing the river ; his body was found on the 20th, by a man named John Nicholson. The evidence went to prove that all the men in the boat at the time of the accident (four iv number) were more or less intoxicated. The verdict returned was "Accidental Drowning."
