MABEL NOTES

The Annual Mabel Presbyterian social was held on Sept. 29th. The night was line and the church was comfortably filled. Rev. Mr Ross (Hokonui) presided, and a first-class programme was presented to an appreciative audience. The principal speakers were Revs. Ross, Wedderspoon (Woodlands) and Wallace, Messrs A. G. Brown, J. Graham (Hedgehope). Several musical items were given, and the performers well merited the applause accorded them. Mrs Caldwell (Roslyn), Miss Calvert (Roslvn), Miss Simon (Invercargill), Miss Beer (Grove Bush) and Mr Mclntosh (Hedgehope) all contributed, Miss A. Campbell and Miss Simon ably playing the accompaniments. Miss Saddlier (Woodlands) recited two poems -very -creditably. Supper was handed round by the ladies.

Last month a very touching ceremony took plaee at the church, when a very fine Roll of Honour was unveiled. It is of most artistic design, and reflects great credit on the designers. Mabel church people are to be complimented on their good taste in erecting such a line memorial to the memory of their gallant district hoys. The names of some 25 young men are inscribed, eight of whom made the supreme sacrifice. Chaplain Gilbert, Gol. Major Hargest, and the Rev. Geo. Wallace all spoke very feelingly.
