BLUFF NOTES

BOWLING. The first meeting of the new executive committee was held last week, when the following sub-committees were appointed : Green : Messrs A. McClure, HJCingsland. R. A. Cruickshank, Geo. Walker.. Match Committee : Messrs R. A. Cruickshank. A. McClure, and Geo. Walker. Re the overdraft, the secretary reported having received promises of donations of £3O towards the reduction of said overdraft. It was resolved to hold a tournament on Boxing Bay, the matter to be submitted to Southland Centre for approval. , The date of the social was fixed for Friday, 3rd September, tickets to be 2s 6d and Is. Various sub-commit-tees were appointed to carry out details. A suggestion from a member of the club to abolish handicapping by points, and to substitute three classes in lieu thereof was fully discussed, but it was thought that the club was too young yet for such a scheme to be adopted with success. . A sub committee was appointed to make inquiries from other clubs re admission of lady members, and to make suggestions legarding the same. Three new members were elected. Trophies were promised as follows : For rinks, by the President ; for daubles, by the Vice-Presidents ; for handicap singles, by Mr G. R. George. These are in addition to the challenge ferns donated by Mr Crocket for rinks.

The bachelors' ball held last week turned out a great success, the hall being crowded, and the decorations the best that have been seen at the port yet. His Worship the Mayor (Mr E. A. Nichol), on* behalf of the ladies and the benedicts, thanked the bachelors for the splendid turn-out they had given, and he thought that before the year was out some of the young ladies would take pity on the lonely bachelors. 0 Mr Colin Foibes carried out the duties of M.C. in good style, and Messrs Grant, Bigwood, Delaney, and 'Wilson supplied the music. Mrs E. Parsons and several assistants had charge of that most important department —the supper room, and successfully catered for the large number present. I understand the benedicts are likely to give a return. BREVITIES. Not to be behind the times, the cutter Britannia has been sighting warships instead of airships. "Lis said that our footballers would like the use of the bowling green for training purposes. The secretary of the local football club has been instructed to write and thank the Council for the improvements they are making to the recreation ground. 4Mr J. Dicks, while at work aboard the s.s. Despatch, had the misfortune to fall overboard, and be carried under the oyster beds. He was fortunately rescued by his mates little the' worse for his impromptu bath.
