BLUFF NOTES

BREVITIES. The Loyal Awarua Lodge of Oddfellows hold their annual social on Wednesday, 11th August, and everything promises a successful night. Following are the committee having, the arrangements in hand : N.G., Bro. H, H. Giles, V.G. Bio. C. Ladbrook, E.S. Bro. E. Bradshaw - sec.). Warden Bro. J. W. Bradshaw, Guardian Bro. T. West, P.P.G.M. Bro. J. S. A. McDougall, G.M. Bro. A. V. Valentine.

Shipping has been very quiet this week, which gives the man on the wharf plenty of time for other things, one of which is a proposal to form a lumpers’ union. Such a course would most likely lead to a reduction in wages, as tjxe local wage at present is much higher than at most K.Z. ports.

Some difficulty is being experienced by members of Friendly Societies in coming to a decision in regard to the chemist x-equesting an increase of 2 s per annum per member. On Thursday evening P.P.G.M. Bro. J. McDougall, P.G. Bro. D. McKenzie, G. M. Bro. A. K. Valentine, and N.G. Bro. Giles, of the Oddfellows, met C.R. Bro. A. Bailey, P.C.R.’s Bro. H. Wood, H. H. Moss, and Bro. Sha>v, of the Foresters, and discussed the situation. Eventually a subcommittee was appointed to interview. the chemist, and try to come to some arrangement, and report to a future meeting.

Next week the P.M. Church open a grand Forest Fair in the Drill Hall when it is expected something out of the ordinary will be seen.

Miss Eri Thomson received an enthusiastic send-off as the steamer left the w r harf on Monday, some hundreds of hats and handkerchiefs being waved in farewell.

The light and heavy weight champion boxers of N.Z., Messrs J. Hand M. F. Ryan returned home safe and sound. It is considered a mystery how M. F. Ryan was not picked to go to Sydney, and the Southland Boxing Associatian has taken action in the matter. 4The mysterious lights in the sky have not given much trouble to Portites, but the mysterious shots occasionally heard in the night do cause a little uneasiness.
