District News.

: I NIAGARA NOTES. The breaking up of the school for the holidays was marked by a very enjoyable gathering on 19th December ~ when the pupils contributed a very good programme of action songs, dialogues, and recitations. Mr Brooks, chairman of the committee, presided. For the youngsters the most interesting feature was a Xmas tree laden with 111 toys and useful prizes. In addition to these, each child received a nice book. The teacher, Mrs Woods, lent her piano for the evening, and played the accompaniments. At a meeting of the committee on 28th December a very complimentary resolution in recognition of the interest taken by Mrs Woods in the school and her action in promoting the welfare of the little ones was passed. The mills have closed down for the holidays, and everything is very quiet. Windlburn and Mclntosh, rival coach owners, are taking out heavy loads of passengers en route for Invercargill, or possibly the Bluff, to enjoy their holidays and spend their their hard-earned cash.

The low price of flax is likely to ruin that industry in this district. All the mills have stopped, with the exception of Messrs I. W. Raymond and Co- This mill seems to be doing fairly well, judging by the amount of fibre sent round for shipment. Crops of grass are looking exceedingly well. We have all got notice that we have been transferred to the Clutha electoral district, or rather, the Clutha has been transferred to us. This alteration is causing great dissatisfaction. Although we have every reason to expect to be as well looked after by the Clutha M.H.R. as we are at present, srbill we have no interest in Clutha, commercially or otherwise.

In conclusion, let me wish you the compliments of the season.
