District News.
WRIGHTS BUSH. The bachelors held their annual plain and fancy dress ball in the hall on Friday evening last, and about 40 couples were present. Jt was an .exceptionally good ball, and voted one of the boat held in the district. Excellent music was supplied by Alessrs Aloylan and AlcGillivray. Mr Evans, assisted by Air A. Smith discharged the duties of M.C. in firstclass style. Capital songs were given by Alessrs Robertson, and L. King, and a, recitation by Air A. Toshach.
Among the fancy costumes were:— Mr Blomlield, court costume ; Mr D. McNaughton, Red Indian : Mr W. Ryan, cotton plantation manager ; Mrs R. Lang, Night ; Miss Boyd, Summer ; Miss- 810-mfielcl, court costume ; Mr McKenzie, clown ; Mr -J. Batt, darkie ; Miss- Nunn, Old Judge ; Miss Ryan, Highland lass ; Miss McNaughton, Highland lass- ; Miss Stevens, Forget-me-not ; Miss Dora McKinnon ; Britannia ; Mrs Moor, daffodil ; Mr Moore, a gent of the 18th century ; Mr W. Steans, a bargain hunter’s dream ; and Mr A. McNaughton aundownder. A word of praise isdue to the secretaries, Messrs McKinnon and McNaughton, for the way they arranged the gathering. Mr F. R. Boyd has sold part of his farm to Messrs Bird Bros., sawmillers, and it is understood they intend to erect a mill shortly.
Sowing is in full swing, and the work is well in hand. The lambs are to be seen everywhere, and a good per centage is expected. The local bicycle expert is doing good business-, and the residents rally round him in line style. MABEL. Weather Just perfect. Farmers are very busy tilling the soil. Rabbits very numerous here. By all accounts a good percentage of lambs wifi be the order of the day. Sawmilling very brisk. The local school committee are holding a grand concert and dance in aid of the school funds on 26-th October. Some Invercargill friends have promised assistance, and a great time is expected. The annual election of the public hall committee took place on the 17th inst. Seven nominations- were received for the five positions, and the following were elected :—Messrs G. 'Amos 19 votes ; W. Wilson, H. Robertson, and T. Garvey 18 each ; and J. Wilson 17. Great interestwas shown, twenty members being present. Mr W. Wilson was elected chairman and Mr G, Amos secretary.
