WAIRIO.
The weather for the past few weeks has been all that could be desired, but to-night (Wednesday) a change set in, and we are again in the midst of snow. I hear that the Nightcaps bazaar, in aid of the brass band, was a great success. Farming operations around here are in full swing. Most of the farmers are harrowing, but a few have just started to plough. The inspector of schools is about h re now and is busy examining. Tear own has never seen so many unemployed for the last ten years as has been the case for the past few weeks. The cause is, no doubt, due to the flaxmills being closed down for the winter months, but they will soon be open again. The wages will likely be lower now owing to the fall in the flax market and the over supply of men.
I am sorry to state that Mrs J. McKenzie of Glenhope Park, Woodlaw, has been in very indifferent health, bat hope she will soon be sufficiently recovered to return home. 1 notice that Mr J. C. Thomson, the sitting member, is likely to be opposed by Mr D. Macpherson, late sawmiller of Olautau, and if there be no splitting of the Government vote he should about win. It has been rumoured that Mr Gdfedder, who previously represented Wallace for six years, is likely to be a candidate. He proved himself to be a painstaking and energetic member.
