Farmers are reminded that the by-law regulating the weight of grain in any one sack to foe carried on the railways takes effect from February Ist next. The maximum weight of any sack containing wheat or oats is 2001 b. Any sack of wheat, barley, or oats containing a greater weight than 2001 b is to be charged for at four times the ordinary rate.

The Auckland Star reports that Mr -A. Slater, late bandmaster of the Bluff Band, has been appointed bandmaster of the Hawera Band.

Home mails via 'Frisco close at Inver* cargill at 12.25 p.m. on Monday, and for Britain and Australia per Federal service at 2.45 p.m. same day. Supplementary mails via 'Frisco will also be sent from, here on Tuesday, closing at 12.25 p.m.

Preparing for the fray. The Premier has bad a meeting with the representatives of the Liberal and Labour Federation with a view to arranging a plan of campaign for the forthcoming elections. It contains all that is looked for in such a volume, and in addition several features in tha way of special articles that add materially to its usefulness. To mention only one of these, the digest of the licensing laws of the colony, which will be largely in evidence in connection with the forthcoming elections, is alone worth the modest pricecharged for the book. The digest has been prepared by Mr A. D. Barclay, LL.B., and extends from 432 to page 456, Another batch of 15 Chinese arrived atWellington from Sydney on Wednesday by the Warrimoo. They give their first performance on Monday night, Hedgehope is shortly to lose two muchrespected residents in the persons of Mr and Mrs 0. Lawrence, who are disposing of their property, and leaving for Tasmania, where they hold a considerable area of farming country. The residents of Hedgehope are sorry to part with them, and intend showing their appreciation of their many good qualities by a farewell social and presentation on the 7th Feb. Offers are invited for the collection of dog tax in the county of Southland. A farm, belonging to Mr James Jack, at Gap Hoad, will be sold by Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co. on Monday, 30th January. Particulars are advertised. It is not often the Invercargill Fire Brigade are called out to a fire at which water is not required—is indeed, undesirable, but such was the case on Tuesday night. A truck of lime standing outside* the gasworks caught fire during the heavy rainfall, although protected by two covers, and when the Brigade arrived they ran the truck into the gasworks shed and emptied the contents of the truck. About half the load was destroyed, and a hole was burned through one corner of the waggon. Mr W. B. Scandrett has a residence and freehold at Oolac Bay for disposal. It is notified .on the front page of this issue that Messrs Herbert, Haynes and Co.’s sale begins next Friday. This is an error. The sale will not begin till Friday, 3rd February, and meantime a large quantity of wares dear to the hearts of housewives are being marked down in readiness for the sale. Messrs J. A, Mitchell and Co. will offer a number of good horses in their yards to-day. On Saturday, 18th February, Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co. (in conjunction with the N.M. and A. Co.) will offer the Heddon Bush Estate. In all, 6352 acres, subdivided into 19 farms, will be offered. The greater part of it is wheat land. The upset price and other particui lars are advertised.

Mr R. J. Gumming advertises two town sections fer sale, Mr J, 0. Smart, manager for Otago and Southland of the Government Fire Insurance Department, recently visited Invercargill, and as the outcome of his visit Mr B. J. Gumming has been appointed Invercargill agent for the Department. Mr Gumming, who is now ready to accept fire risks, will cany on the work in his offices in the Athenaeum building, Esk street. Mrs Blue announces she will resume her her musical classes on Monday, January 30th. It was announced in last issue that Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co , would hold a clearing sale of land, horses, implements, plant, furnituie, etc., at Gap Road, near Winton, on Wednesday, 25th January under instructions from the administratrix of the late Mr F. Jack, Since then date of the sale has been altered, and it will now take place on Monday 30th January.
