SOUTHLAND HORSES.
“ Marairua ” writes : —I saw by the papers that a few of our Southland horses had lately been shipped to Melbourne. I had the good luck to be in town that day, and saw the shipment depart. It is a good thing .that there is a market for this class
of horses. Amongst the lot I saw three pretty fair sorts. One was a young horse bred about Tapanui, got by an imported horse out of a wellbred mare. This colt, I think, could make a season in any country, but I suppose the big money tempts the shipper. Another, a big bay, 3 years off, got by McArthur (imported), was ) a real good clifty horse, and should meet a ready market over the water. He has a few first prize tickets with him, which is a very good recommendation in a strange market, he having been first in D.unedin last year as a three year old, and first at the Invercargill show same year, being placed in a very large ring of all ages. Next, but not least, was a big dark bay horse, same age as the above, the property of Mr Davies of Mataura. He lacked condition a little, but with a foundation to build on —I never saw better, with a set of the best of feet and pasterns, and his bone is first-class; plenty of the right class of hair stuck on just properly ; hocks very broad and clean, and he stands fair on them and moves like a thoroughbred. He is another that should never have left our shores. He was got by Craigievar out of a young Prince of Wales mare, a noted prizelaker. The most of her colts have been kept entire, and have brought very high prices in Southland, but Mr Davies, like the rest, is going to get the big money.
