ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.
Notes by “ Socker.”
The 1.A.F.0. and the Celtics held a final practice on the Red’s ground on 15th July, there being a fair turn-out of members of both clubs. Harlow sent the ball in motion for the Reds with a smart pass to his left wing. Neil cut in and obtaining possession, dribbled through the opposing backs and scored first blood for the Blacks. Play alternated after this all in favour of the Reds, Harlow scoring three goals in quick succession. Adams, the Black’s custodian, being apparently off colour. Hay and Harlow played up brilliantly, their passing and dribbling being of a very high order. Morgan, at full-back, gave a fine exposition, defending and kicking in good style. The Red s custodian was very safe, and with more practice and a little judicious advice, should eventually prove hard to beat. Neil and Ashley were both in great form among the Black for-
wards, while McDowell and Mulcahey were, the pick o£ the backs. The first inter-club local match will be played next Wednesday, when the Invercargill will play the Celtic eleven on the Red’s ground. The game should prove a willing go, as both teams are in excellent fettle. The proposal to hold a match between Kaitangata and Nightcaps has been in discussion for some time past. Latest advices to hand state that the O.F.A. have granted £3 towards the expenses of the Kaitangata team, thus clearing away all obstacles in the way of the promoters’ desires. The match will probably come off in two or three weeks from date. The C.A.F.C. have a first eleven that will do great things if they hang together. Some really good form was shown by them in Wednesday’s match, particularly among the backs. A little more defensive work and more pitching together among the would strengthen the team immensely. The defeat of the Kaitangata eleven by Waikare (Dunedin) came as a misfortune to the collier boys. They have worked well together this season, and their chances for the championship seemed as rosy as those of any team. However, they still have an opportunity of making a good fight of it, and may luck attend them in the next round. N.A.F.C. are in training for the coming matches with Kaitangata and a combined Invercargill eleven. The up-country boys will have their work cut out to beat both elevens, and it will take a fair amount of training to carry them through successfully. It has been suggested that a Dunedin eleven, picked from the schools, play a Southland, team. The hint is given for what it is worth. The schools committee (G.A.F.C.) should be able to judge of the idea and take action in the matter. The game should be worth seeing, as the boys in both towns are eager on the game, which they play with a fair show of skill and judicious headwork.
