THE MERKS.

The Mercantile Rifles held their first annual social in Ashley’s Hall on Friday, 26th June, and it was voted by all and sundry as “ excellent.” Commandant Hawkins was in charge, and after his scouts had thoroughly reconnoitred the vicinity and reported all correct, he detailed the course of action to be adopted by the main body, who were all comfortably seated round a score and ten tables. The whistle sounding, an earnest start was' made to locate the winner of a two and a-half hours’ encounter. Some bouts were prolonged and keen, and in a number of cases it was the last cut that located the victors. The final struggle' found the vanguard led by Misses Brass and Raeside representing the ladies, and Sergt. Padgdt and Corporal Gilkison the gentlemen, The rearguard was very ably represented by Miss Frampton and Trooper McGregor who must be congratulated on the “ boobies ” collected during 7 the march. Captain Watson, after presenting prizes won during the evening, took the opportunity of thanking patrons for their presence, and invited the strapping, handsome young men present who were not connected with volunteering to throw in their lot with the Merks, and thus participate in the good things available. A dainty little supper was tastefully set up, and the i little army, having a thorough appetite after their exertions, took to this varied form of action very ably. The remainder of the evening was devoted to the more muscular amusement of dancing, interspersed with several songs, well rendered by Corp, Hunter. Congratulations are due to the Merks’ team for the excellent exhibition of physical drill given, also to the various corps for being so well represented, and last but not least to the energetic secretary, committee and Mr Hawkins,\ who had the handling of arrangements.
