The butchers of Invercargill, driven thereto by the high rates ruling for stock, notify a further advance in the price of meat. The no license question has got into the betting arena. A report is current that a well-known sporting publican wagered £5 to .£3 that prohibition will not be carried at the forthcoming election, but afterwards asked that the bet be cancelled. One of the results of the late war in South Africa has been a great demand for artificial limbs. The makers of these have been exceedingly busy of late, as a resident of Southland who was unfortunately in need of a wooden leg has found to his cost. The limb was ordered mouths age, and has not yet come to hand, but an assurance has been received that it will be on the way ere long. A choice of three house properties is put before our readers by Mr W. B Scandrett, Land Agent, to suit different buyers.— one of four rooms, one five, and one ot six rooms. A young lady from the Bluff recently visited Bortobello, and left some personal effects there, and she is requested to communicate with this office. See advertisement. The Invercargill Musical Union, to whom the people of the district owe so many delightful entertainments, give a grand miscellaneous concert in the Theatre'Eojal on Friday evening. A glance over the programme will reveal that it contains the material for an exceedingly enjoyable evening. Messrs McKay Bros, have prime potatoes and onions for sale. Mr R. J. Cummings has a comfortable 4roomed house on the North Road for sale. Mr C. H. Roberts, architect, invites tenders for the erection of a residence in Yarrow street. Messrs J. A. Mitchell & Co.’s sale of horses to-day will include a line of 25 draught and light horses. The Rev. Mr Stubbs, of Christchurch, lectures in the Theatre Royal to-morrow evening on the fruits of the liquor traffic, and will deliver addresses during the week at places advertised. We have to acknowledge receipt from the Bible Depot of an interesting souvenir of the-Torrey-Alexander mission in the chape of an illustrated edition of the Outlook. Letterpress and pictures are alike admirable. Mails for the United Kingdom, Australia*, and Cape Colony close at Invercargill at 2.45 p.m. on Monday, and for the same countriesand America, via Frisco, at 3.15 p.m. The Hon. Mr Seddon is due at Auckland to-day from Hobart. Judging from the energy which the respective candidates are putting into the campaign the elections for Wallace and Mataura will be among the most keenly competed in the colony. Mr J. Wilson, Esk street, advertises a new list of town properties placed in his hands for disposal.
Mr M. Qilfedder addresses the Wallace electors at Otautau this evening.
The Southland County Council invite tenders for a number of road works up till Triday, 31st October.
In order that a vote may be secured on the no-license question in Awarua, the temperance party will nominate Mr D. Whyte, of Wairoa, now in Southland in the interests ot the H.Z. Alliance, as a candidate for that electorate. In the same way the Rev. F. W. Isitt, of Wellington, ■will be brought out for Waikouaiti,
Mr Willoughby and Company gave three entertainments in Invercargill this week, devoting two evenings to the doings and sayings of “ The Wrong Mr Wright.’ The comedy proved delightfully droll, and the audiences that crowded into the Theatre Royal each evening were well pleased with the quality of the bill of fare.
Writing from Vienna to a friend in Invercargill. Dr Hogg, who left here some months ago on a tour through the Old "World, states that he hopes to reach Invercargill by the middle of December. He and Mrs Hogg have had a pleasant time, but for all that he will be pleased to get back to his old quarters and amongst old friends.
In pursuance of the crusade against the email birds’ pest, the Southland CountyCouncil in this issue give a list of the places at -which the heads and eggs of small birds will be bought at the rate of twopence per dozen.
Mr T. M. Rankin, watchmaker and jeweller, Tay street, has been compelled, owing to increasing business, to strengthen his staff, and notifies that medals, jewels, brooches, etc , can be made on the premises at short notice. Mr Rankin’s reputation as a jeweller is well-known, and the work he turns outjinvariably satisfies his patrons.
A remarkable instance of maternal affection on the part of a ewe was. lately witnessed (writes a correspondent) at a country township. A number of ewes that had changed owners at the saleyards were put into a paddock belonging to the local hotel to await being driven to their destination, six miles distant, on the following day .Pour or five lambs were born during the night, but the weather being very -inclement, all but one were found dead in the morning. This the owner of the flock left with the landlady of the hotel to be brought up as a pet. The day after,*the landlady’s son was surprised to find a sheep in the paddock where the flock had been about and smelling at the dead lambs as if searching for her own. On being shown the living lamb, which had meanwhile been housed and fed by bottle andiquill, she at once took to it. Somewhat later the driver returned to inquire after a missing dog, and on being told of the return of the ewe, said that both should remain where they were. They may now be seen both safe and happy ; and certainly the mother well'deserves to keep her lost little
The following interesting note is to hand from the secretary, Mr E. A. Nichol, of the Church of fEngland, Bluff : —At the Church of England Bazaar, held here on May 9th, a bag-sewing competition was held. Each bag of oats’,was sewn by a lady, and a small present with the sewer’s name attached was put in withjthe oats and a request that the finder would acknowledge the receipt of it* By the last mail I received the following letter : 37th Highland Horse Imperial Yeomanry, 15th September, 1902. Erom Officer Commanding Highland Horse, to the secretary Church of England, Bluff, Hew Zealand : On undoing a sack of oats at Tarhastadt, Cape Colony, on 6th September, 1902, your pipe and tobacco were found inside it by private Mclndoo, who, as the recipient of the present, wishes to thank you.
