Stewart Island.
The lethargy into which the Church of England congregation had fallen since the departure of the Rev. Mr Bates, ended with the arrival of the Rev. Mr Swinburn, who visited this part of the world on the 2nd ult. It was the first time the rev. gentlemen had visited the Island, and he won golden opinions from all members of his flock—each service held being well attended by old and young of both sexes in spite of the inclemency of the weather, and dirty, rough roads. It is to be hoped, now that the rev. gentleman has once broken the ice, he will be able to visit this rather neglected part of the world regularly. The weather for the past week has been a great improvement on that of the preceding month, and this, combined with the advance in the price of fish, viz., from 10s per cwt. to 15s per cwt, has caused the majority of the inhabitants to go about with a more cheerful air.
I have been informed on the best authority that the sawmill situated in Patterson Inlet, and owned by Messrs Lonneker Bros. & Swain, has changed hands, Mr Swain having bought out the interests of Messrs Lonneker Bros. It is the wish of all residents here that this deservedly popular resident will continue to prosper.
