SOLVENCY OF THE COLONY.
The country is a good country, and it will take a great deal to make it insolvent as long as the revenue is as buoyant as it is at the present time. If it is found we are going too far the people will very soon haul us up. There is no doabt the expenditure is increasing much to fast, and there is need for a drag to be put on the Government. Some ,of the expenditure, no donbt, has been wisely increased, in providing certain advantages for the people of the country. In the case of the dairying industry, for instance, it was necessary to increase the Agricultural Department, to appoint men to see that the shipments of dairy produce were made to meet the requirements of the Home market. As regards wool, I can say from my own knowledge that it did not realise last year, in many cases, fifty per cent, of what it did the year before, and some other industry, such as the dairying industry, required to be fostered and developed so as to give us something to take the place of our wool returns. — Hon. Mr McLean.
