HE WAS TO HAVE ILLUMINATED ST. PAUL'S.

The illuminations of London for the Coronation were to have been superb, and it is interesting to note that the money for some of them will be contributed by rich Americans. One of the finest examples was to have been St. Paul’s, illuminated at the expense, practically, of Mr Pierpont Morgan, the gentleman responsible for the recent ‘ Morganatic ’ union between the Neptune of English commerce and the Thetis of Columbia. Mr Morgan will not be allowed to buy the historic edifices of the British nation ; presumably if be formed a trust for the American ‘ Eagle ’ to swoop down on the dome of the leading cathedral of the empire, Parliament would see that it was protected by a ‘ bill ’ of sufficient strength, even though it did come from a ‘Wren’ in the original instance. But the shipping gentleman of many millions had only the one intention, of that we may be sure—to pay a compliment to the home of his forefathers, even as it is in all those of his compatriots of British stock, on a unique and magnificent occasion. And in this he has set an example to the world, and in so far as he was assisted by many other Americans in the same way, shown that world that the Coronation of King Edward had as much affectionate interest for the children of Englishmen in America as in the British dominions themselves.
