WAIANIWA NOTES. A concert and dance in aid of the funds of the Spar Bash hall took place on Friday, 23rd May. Owing to bad weather many'of the performers were unable to attend, and those that did brave the elements deserve and have the best thanks of the committee. Songs were given by Mrs Clark, Miss Crengle, and Messrs Clark and Ennis. Mr Jno. M‘Crostie (junr.) played two selections on the bagpipes ; Mr Ennis also danced a Highland fling ; Mr and Mrs Clark sang two duets ; Miss McOrostie acted as accompanist; while Mr John McCrostie ably filled the chair. Refreshments were handed round, and a dance followed, which was much enjoyed. Music w T as supplied by Merrs Stewart and Robertson, assisted by Messrs Banton and Cochrane. Mr Thos. Swale made an efficient M.O.

The weather has been very rough and 1 cold, and farming operations have been considerably retarded. Fortunately most of the farmers had threshed and got their oats carted before the roads got bad. On Thursday, 29th ult., Mr J. C. Thomson, of Riverton, gave a lecture here. A treat was expected, and the public was not disappointed. Mr Thomson is a splendid lecturer, and he chose a fine subject —‘ British heroes and heroism.’ He spoke for over two hours, and was frequently interrupted with bursts of applause. The |lecture was given under the auspices of the W.0.T.U., and the proceeds are in aid of temperance work. The meeting opened with an organ solo by Miss Blakie. Songs were admirably sung by Miss Blakie and Mr Jas. Blue. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Thomson.
