TO CHRISTEN EMPEROR WILLIAMS’S YACHT.
According to exchanges, the German Emperor’s 3 acbt, built by an American firm, will be the fastest craft of the kind afloat, though of course she is hardly as luxurious as the latest Royal yacht of England. The launching of the vessel is to be made the excuse for very warm international demonstrations between Germany and the United States, the Emperor being represented in Hew York by his brother, Admiral Prince Henry of Prussia. It was the Emperor himself who asked that the christening ceremony be performed by Miss Alice Roosevelt, the President’s consent resulting in the following cablegrams : —“ Berlin, January 11. To President Roosevelt. I am most gratified by your kind permission for Miss Roosevelt performing the christening ceremony of my yacht. It gives me great pleasure to announce to you that I have ordered my yacht Hohenzoilern to cross over and be present at the ceremony. My brother, Admiral Prince Henry of Prussia, will appear as my representative, and will be able to express to you once more my sincere feelings and friendship for the United States and their illustrious head. — William I.R. Washington, January 11. —To Emperor William. Your Majesty’s intention to send over your yacht Hohenzollerh to attend the christening by my daughter of your new yacht is a source of great pleasure to me. I can assure you heartfelt welcome for your brother, Admiral Prince Henry, to whom I shall personally express my sincere feelings of esteem for your Majesty, as well as my best wishes for the welfare of the German people.— Theodore Roosevelt.” The German Emperor sent his cable in English, and President Roosevelt sent his in German, evidence perhaps of one of those extra little courtesies in which beads of nations delight. In recognition of the President’s consent to Dia daughter performing the launching ceremony, Emperor William has signified his desire that his American-built yacht shall be named after the fair christener —Alice.
