Cycling Notes.

Andy Balston’s performance (on Dunlops) in the great Warnambool-to-Melbourne road race, in covering 165 miles in nine hours thirty seconds, unpaced, is by far the best performance ever accomplished in this great event, the next best unpaced effort being W. Adams’ nine hours ten minutes. Ralston’s performance ia all the more meritorious when it is pointed out that J. Carpenter’s time, with multicycle pace, was only some twenty minutes better. ‘ Scotty ’ has upheld the honour of this colony well, and his performance was appreciated by not only cyclists but the public generally 7. * * =* An English cycle inventor has just brought out a six speed gear, which is worked by a small lever on the handlebar. The six speeds allow a range of thirty per cent; the lowest and highest limits being reserved for exceptional conditions. A small dial on the handlebar shows the rider the gear in action. This new device is to be on exhibition at the English cycle shows. * * *■ Mr James, the New Zealand manager of the Dunlop Tyre Company, made a start to promote a monster moonlight cycling run to Sumner on the 14th of November, and the point to be struck home is —cyclists want better roads —and this monster affair will go to show the voting power that is behind the demand. # * * Andy Ralston, like all good riders, recognises a good thing'when he sees it. Dunlop tyre« helped him to win the teat race, carried him to Melbourne, and carried him home ahead of the best road riders Australia can produce.
