Bluff Notes.
Social gatherings are all the rage in the Bluff at present, so we cannot growl of lack of opportunities to come together for an evening’s amusement, or ‘to hae a friendly crack wi’ yin anither.’ A welcome social was given to the Rev. Mr Hall by the congregation of the Primitive Methodist Church, upon his arrival here to take charge of that pastorate ; next came the annual congregational social of the Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, 17th; then another social on Friday, 19th, in the Sailors’ Resc, held by the crew of the G.S.S. Hinemoa and their shore friends, when a very pleasant evening was spent ; the genial chief steward of the Government boat (Mr H. Woods) keeping everybody in a good humor; and on Monday (22nd) the Catholics of the Bluff tendered a social to the Hon. J. G. Ward. Previous to the social the hon. gentleman inspected the local volunteer company, and expressed himself as being very well pleased with their efficiency ; which reflects great credit upon Captain Barber. The Company conferred the rank of hon. captain upon Mr Ward. At the Drill Hall a number of friends were assembled, and Upon Mr Ward s arrival there, he was presented by Mr J. P. Roberts with a silver cup, knife, fork and spoon, for his infant son, Awarua Pat. Mr Ward, in replying, thanked the donors for their handsome gift, saying that occasions like the present helped very materially to cement the bonds of friendship existing between his family and residents of the Bluff. Thereafter the assembled company spent a pleasant hour in social intercourse. A considerable amount of interest was manifested on Wednesday with regard to the municipal elections. Eleven gentlemen were nominated for the positions of councillors, the successful candidates being :—• Dr Torrance, Messrs Cruickshanks, F. Tipping, J. P. Roberts, R. F. Dawson, Ridland, S. T. Jones, James Walker, and A. McKenzie. The unsuccessful ones for municipal honours were Messrs P. Georgeson and P. Andersen, who, I think, should be congratulated o a their escape, as there are far more kicks than ha’pence accorded to members of our Borough Council.
