THE LOSS OF THE SHETLAND BOATS.
The men went out with lightsome hearts, Hardy and strong and brave, To gather the fisherman’s harvest in— And found a watery grave. For the awful storm came rushing on, Ho boat could live in that gale; Husbands, brothers, and sons went down — Hush ! List to the widows’ wail. Do we not hear it in mournful tones O’er the ocean’s roar ? Stirring our hearts to their deepest depths, On this far, distant shore. Can we not see each desolate home ? The little ones hushed and sad. Wondering that father comes not now, Whose coming aye made them glad. And each fond mother thinks with fear How her dear ones can be fed, When he who toiled for their every want How sleeps in ocean’s bed. ’Oh, sorely tried ones, do not fear, Our Father will bear you up, And in the higher life bring good, Even from that bitter cup. Ye shall not want, for though He’s ta’en Your loved ones from your side, He still will care for you and yours, And fail not to provide. Let us as stewards of His gifts Stretch forth the helping hand; In loving thoughts and generous deeds , May every heart expand. —1.A.A.8.
