The Southern Cross. PUBLISHED WEEKLY. INVERCARGILL, SATURDAY, FEB. 2. THE WOOL SALES.

At the local sales on Monday next the brokers will submit catalogues totalling close upon 6000 bales. Buyers representative of the principal manufacturers in the old country will be in attendance. A fair amount of wool passed in on the Bth January will be offered again, but it is doubtful, in view of reports of Northern sales, whether there will be an advance on passed-in bids. It was thought immediately the London sales opened that the better tone prevaling in fine wools would assisr our colonial market, but the pecular state of trade, no doubt partially due to the tightness of the money market in London, has caused manufacturers to reduce rather than increase their limits. Speculators are not very keen at present —many of them suffered severely by the heavy drop last year, while the unsettled state of matters at Home seems to point to dull trade thoughout the year. The average range of prices at the last sales was as under .

and we anticipate that values will rule practically on a par with above, except for coarse and inferior varieties, which will probably rule easier, Dunedin sales report an advance in halfbred and merino, and we trust to bear that the advance will also be extended to the Invercargill sales.
