Cycling.

Great efforts are now being made by American and Continental crafcks to gain the honour of being the first cyclist to cover forty miles within the hour. The best riders at this distance are Bikes (U.S.A.), Chase (England), Bange (France), Michael (Wales). It is anticipated that one of these riders will secure the coveted record before the present American and Continental season terminates. * * * A regrettable accident occurred on the 24th ulto. at St. Kilda (Victoria) during the running of the 10 miles scratch race, seven riders, viz., Green, Parsons, Gordon, Walne, Carpenter, Body and Barker coming down during the early part of the race. The most seriously injured were Green, fractured arm; Parsons, fractured arm ; Gordon, badly cut and bruised, whilst the rest of the men were more or less knocked about. It is terribly hard luck for Jack Green that he should thus be incapacitated for the next two months, thus losing the best part of the season. Ah enquiry held as to the cause of the fall brought to light the fact that Body was the first to fall, caused through his touching another rider’s wheel. The latest intelligence is that Green, Parsons and Gordon are progressing as well as can be expected. * * * The three principal hour records are now held on Dunlop tyres. The world’s safety record stands to the credit of A. Bauge, with 39 miles 1111 yards, the English safety record to Arthur Chase with 37 miles 196 yards, and the British motor cycle record to C. Machin with a scare of 39 miles 324 yards. * * * The New Zealand Wheel Race, which is to be held on the 15th and 18th inst. should prove a good thing for Dunlop riders, as this event, which carries the heaviest prize money of any in the colony, has always been accounted for by the good old Dunlop. # The latest idea of the Dunlop Company in advertising for a name for their second quality tyres —for which they offer a £2O reward, has caught on. The Christchurch house is receiving tons of suggested names, and would advise that the competion is only open to the 31st inst. The International Fifty Mile paced race, decided at the Parc des Princess track on October 14th, saw riders of Dunlop tyres well to the fore, the first three men having their wheels shod with the ‘ First and foremost ’ tyre. Chase was first in one hour twenty one minutes thirty five and one one —fifth seconds, Walters 2nd., and Huret 3rd. * * * Now that the handicaps for the N,Z. Wheel Race have appeared the writer should say that it is a good thing for Murie, who gave Christchurch people a taste of his qualities at Lancaster Park last year. On heresay, Draffin will be the only man in the hunt, but the present scribe likes Murie, as he is the best known quantity. *** G. G. Body, who won the last Wheel Race (on Dunlops), is a competitor in the Austral this year, and is on the 300 yards mark; and one Melbourne critic at least thinks he has been treated very liberally. If Body can manage to get a break, the Australian riders will again find that New Zealanders are tip top unpaced riders.
