THE GUN.

(By f ‘ Misspire.”) The Southland gun club fired their usual monthly competitions on Wednesday, 21st, when three matches were got off, the first being a handicap five bird sparrow match, the prize a valuable breach-loading gun. There were ten competitors, and after a rattling go between Messrs Brey and Friend the latter won, grassing thirteen birds ,in great style. This is the first time Mr Friend has shot at sparrows from the traps, and it prooves that he is also one of the best shots, besides being the “ boss ” angler of Southland, The next match was five double rises at inanimate birds, for the second round of Mr Roope’s trophy. At this class of shooting Mr W. McCarthy particularly shines, and was evidently having a day out, as he broke his first six birds splendidly, and only for being baulked by one trap getting out of order, I believe he would have made a possible, which would have been a wonderful performance on a windy day. The final round for this trophy comes off next month, when I expect to see a willing go between Messrs McCarthy, Saunders, Friend, Brey, Wills, and Bain. In preference, the former, if on the job will come out on top. The third competition was a nine inanimate bird sweep, unknown rises. Mr McCarthy again showed hia superiority by making a possible, the old veteran Joe Brey one behind. Owing to a few competitors being unable to get out, the final round for Messrs A, and W. McCarthy’s cup had to be postponed until next shoot. If it be true about the score that was put up the other night by Mr McDonald, with one leg in, he must have a “ dead bard ’’ for the Gup. I notice that Mr Brey is the only Southland competitor entered for the Dunedin Gun Club’s big match. I wish the old sport good luck.
