Bluff Notes.
G-ore street at the present time gives one a very good idea of what a diggings township is like. For a length of from two to three hundred feet in the busiest part of the thoroughfare the pedestrian must keep a sharp look-out to avoid falling into any of the many excavations which mar the £ beauty ’ of our main street Congested drains are the cause of all this trouble, and, judging by results so far (after a week’s work of the combined forces of Town Council, Fire Brigade, and Harbour Board staffs), they are likely to remain in the same state. Wanted—A practical man to superintend. Matters in the shipping line have been quiet lately, the only vessel in port being the barque Ganymede with a cargo of guano from Surprise Island. The s.s. Westralia from Melbourne" came in on Monday and left for the North on Tuesday evening. I hear that the Harbour Board are going to fix meters on their water mains. This will make householders more frugal in the, use of the water. Hitherto there has been no restriction upon the quantity used. Oystermen and fishermen are hard at work again. We have been getting splendid weather lately and consequently large catches of fish and oysters are of daily occurrence. The season comes to an end next.month, so the men will want all they can make to tide them over the close season. We are shortly to be blessed (or inflicted) with that periodical visitation called a church bazaar, this particular bazaar being in aid of the local Presbyterian church. From all accounts the committee have a large and varied stock of articles in hand, so don’t forget to bring along plenty of spare cash when the bazaar is going.
