ORETI RIFLES’ SOCIAL.

Ashley’s Hall has seldom been so well filled on the occasion of an annual reunion as it was at the above corps’ social on Wednesday evening last, while the arrangements made for the enjoyment of guests by the committee were so perfect as to ensure the maximum of pleasure to everyone present, and the said committee, both ladies and gentlemen members, are to be congratulated on the emphatic success of their initial venture. At one time close on 80 couples were present, the capacity of the hall being severely taxed to contain them during the course of the mazy waltz oi more lively quadrille, but collisions only afforded mere zest to the dancers. As a predominating colour the uniformal khaki ran the white dresses of the ladies very closely, and its wearers included representatives from each of the other town corps, a fact .vhich should be very pleasing to the Oretis as showing true comradeship. The commissioned ranks of the district were represented by Major Hawkins, Lieut. Siddall, Lieut. Hall, Lieut, Lennie, and Lieut. Browning, while other representative guests included Staff-Sergt. Major Knee, Col-Sergb. O’Toole, Col.- Sergt. Mair (Awaruas), Sergt, A. Ferguson (Band), and the full N.C.OJs strength of the corps, the duties of Ms.O. being performed by Sergis. Lennie and Boyce with conspicuous success. At these functions music and catering are necessarily important items, and in this case both were alike good, the former being rendered by Miss Peters and Mr R. A, Edwards, and the latter by Messrs Kingsland & Son, the supper tables being decorated prominently by the ladies’ committee, who were in charge here, with the colours of the corps (khaki, maroon and gold) producing a nice effect. During the course of the evening many fine songs were given, the singers being Mrs W. H. Jacquiery, Miss Stevens, Miss Howie, and Miss Thomson, Messrs G. Jacquiery and M. Hawkins. Mr Alex. Sutherland contributed a capital step-dance. Games were provided for the nondancers, of whom quite a number were present. The festivities broke up at a moderately late hour, after one of the most enjoyable gatherings of the season.
